Chapter 43 – The Alpha Falls

Cheng Yang’s heart raced with urgency, but the speed of his Magic Missile spell was limited to one per second. With minimal attack speed bonuses, he could only suppress his anxiety and fire another missile at the approaching alpha wolf.

The alpha ignored the incoming magical attack, focused solely on gnawing through the tree trunk. Cheng Yang’s spell struck true once more, but without any scouting skills, he couldn’t gauge the beast’s remaining health. Based on its late first-tier strength, he estimated it could withstand four more hits. Two more successful attacks would finish it.

Time was running out. The tree beneath him groaned and cracked under the relentless assault of the pack. As it toppled, Cheng Yang gripped the trunk with one hand while launching another Magic Missile with his bone staff. Even mid-fall, his combat instincts ensured the spell found its mark.

Instead of fleeing upon landing, Cheng Yang made a calculated leap onto a branch of the falling tree. Five bloodthirsty wolves closed in, their eyes gleaming with hunger. The alpha watched with mocking eyes, confident its pack would tear the mage apart.

Cheng Yang’s expression hardened with resolve. He fired a Magic Missile at one of the approaching wolves just as his perch gave way. Landing amidst the pack, he immediately took down one wolf with a well-placed spell.

The remaining three lunged at him, fangs bared. Though Cheng Yang dodged their initial strikes, their teeth sank into his thighs. Pain shot through his body as his health dropped by 24 points. Despite the world’s game-like mechanics, the agony was very real.

Drawing on his past life’s experiences, Cheng Yang remained focused. He quickly downed a Medium Health Potion, restoring his health to full. The potion’s effects, enhanced by his innate medicinal constitution, made it more potent than usual.

Exchanging blows with the wolves, Cheng Yang systematically eliminated them, though not without cost. By the time the last wolf fell, his health had dropped to half. The alpha, realizing its pack was being decimated, hesitated in confusion.

Seizing the opportunity, Cheng Yang charged forward, closing the distance in an instant. A final Magic Missile struck the alpha’s head, ending its life before it could mount a proper defense.

Wiping sweat from his brow, Cheng Yang surveyed the battlefield. The fight had been perilously close – one misstep in timing his potions could have been fatal. Yet his composure and strategic use of resources had carried him through.

There was no time to rest. Hundreds of ordinary wolves still roamed the area. For Cheng Yang, hunting lower-level beasts was more efficient for gathering spiritual energy. After downing another potion, he turned to face the approaching horde.

The common wolves, unaware of their leaders’ demise, followed their instincts toward the battle site. Cheng Yang met them head-on, his speed and power turning the encounter into a one-sided slaughter. He led the pack in circles through the confined area, methodically thinning their numbers.
